How Does the AIRSCARF® Work in Mercedes-Benz Convertibles?
Few things in life are as enjoyable as driving a fine Mercedes-Benz convertible with the top down on the open road. But as convertible owners will attest, this isn’t always practical in colder weather. That’s why the engineers at Mercedes-Benz came up with a solution designed to extend the so-called “convertible season” beyond the summer months. The AIRSCARF® system found on Mercedes-Benz convertibles and cabriolets is a unique system that channels warm air onto the necks of driver and passenger when the weather turns chilly.
The innovative AIRSCARF® neck warming system is fully adjustable, and allows vehicle occupants to select and adjust the flow of air that’s directed onto their necks. Of course it can also be turned off completely if you simply prefer a cold neck. When the AIRSCARF® is on, the adjustable air vents gently direct warm air onto the neck. A fan regulates the rate of air flow based upon the speed of the vehicle, providing more warm air when the car is traveling faster.
What Mercedes-Benz Vehicles Have AIRSCARF®?
The Mercedes-Benz AIRSCARF® system is currently available on all convertible and cabriolet models in the lineup. That means sporty models like the C 300 Cabriolet, the E 400 and E 550 Cabriolet, the luxurious S 550 Cabriolet as well as the AMG® S 63 and S 65 Cabriolet models all have AIRSCARF® available. Even the exciting new SLC 300 Roadster and the powerful SL 450 and SL 550 Roadster, as well as their AMG® variants all have the AIRSCARF® system integrated into the seatbacks.
How it Works
With the AIRSCARF® system, vents beneath each headrest gently deliver a warm flow of air outward onto the necks of driver and passenger. The heated air comes from a Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heating element, and is driven by a fan located within the seatback. Individual 3-stage temperature controls allow for occupants to adjust their virtual scarfs to suit their personal needs and desires. The volume of air that comes through the system is automatically adjusted based on vehicle speed.
There are certainly more ground-breaking and potentially life-saving technologies than AIRSCARF® that have been introduced in Mercedes-Benz vehicles in recent years. However, ask any Mercedes-Benz owner here on Long Island if they’d give up their AIRSCARF® on a crisp autumn morning. It’s our guess you’d have a hard time convincing them it’s not one of the best Mercedes-Benz innovations ever.
