The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Named 2015 World Car of the Year

May 18th, 2015 by

As one of the most respected car brands throughout the world, Mercedes-Benz has quite a bit to live up to year after year. The name conjures up performance, luxury, and reliability, and makes the Mercedes-Benz badge a familiar site on every continent. At Mercedes-Benz of Massepequa, we feel you’ll find nothing better on the road. With the announcement of the 2015 World Car of the Year Award, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class now has more hardware to back up our opinion.

What is the World Car of the Year Award?

Many publications around the world announce their own car awards, from magazines, to newspapers, to websites. Too often, these publications have a very narrow focus, looking only at vehicles available in their own countries. This award unifies the opinions of 48 journalists from 22 different countries, and brings attention to vehicles that have global impact. The award was introduced in 2004, and has been presented every year since.

To be considered for one of the World Car Awards, a vehicle must be available in at least 5 countries, across at least 2 continents – even if a vehicle is available in all countries on the European continent, it is not eligible if it is not available on another continent. While the World Car of the Year award is the main award given out by the committee, it also awards minor ones such as the World Green Car, World Luxury Car, World Performance Car, and World Car Design of the Year.

A Redesign for the Ages

With the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class and the GLA taking their place at the bottom of the Mercedes-Benz family tree, the 2015 redesign meant that the C-Class could grow and develop and in the end, blossom. It no longer has to sit as the entry-level vehicle, but instead can step up in performance and style without worrying about ricing itself out of an entry-level budget. Under the hood, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class received two new engines – a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the C 300, making 241 horsepower, and a twin-turbocharged V6 in the C 400 that is rated at 329 horsepower. Both versions are equipped with a seven-speed automatic transmission, and 4MATIC® all-wheel drive is standard on both models, making for confident handling in less-than-pleasant conditions.

It would not be a Mercedes without strikingly good exterior bodywork and interior comforts. On the outside, the C-Class matured, taking styling notes from the flagship S-Class sedan. The front end was remodeled, with a revised front fascia. The profile was softened slightly particularly at the rear – where the previous generation had an abrupt stop at the back of the decklid, highlighted by the decklid spoiler, the redesigned rounded the rear end for a more classic luxury appearance.

Inside, the design language was stepped up to reflect the C-Class rising above the entry-level, again mimicking the larger S-Class. The interior update included large, round heating and air conditioning vents, a center console that flows towards the rear, and higher-quality trim on the doors. Material quality is as good as ever, and so is the cabin space for passengers. Even the most basic trim features advanced technology in both the information and entertainment fields, while headlining options such as the Burmester sound system and COMAND® infotainment system raise the C-Class to an even higher level.
